Health Occupations prepares people to work as Health Care Aides in hospitals, nursing homes and the community. Upon completion of the course, students will receive three certificates. These certificates are: Health Care Aide, Home Care Attendant, and Resident Assistant. Students will study the structure and function of the human body, diseases and how they affect people, and basic nursing skills. Approximately half of the course time is spent at the work site, gaining practical experience in nursing homes and hospitals.

Course Description
The first six weeks of the course is divided between working in the classroom and the nursing lab obtaining the preliminary knowledge and skills needed to begin work experience. After this point the student will spend 2 days a week in the classroom and 3 days a week at the work site. Topics to be studied include:

II. INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CARE
III. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
IV. GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
V. SAFETY
VI. ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING
VII. CARING FOR CLIENTS IN THE COMMUNITY
VIII. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
IX. INTRODUCTION TO HOLISTIC HEALTH
X. CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

The employment prospects upon completion of this program are excellent. There are a variety of full-time and part-time positions available in numerous different settings. The average starting salary is $11.00 to $14.00 per hour.

The Health Occupations program serves as a good foundation for anyone interested in working with others. Health Occupations may serve as a “stepping stone” for those wishing to further their education in the health care field (nursing, medicine, therapies, EMT), the child care field, and the police department.
